Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2

Assignment 9A – Testing the Hypothesis, Part 2
·         Who: through my process of conducting these interviews I found out that there are people that fall outside the boundary of my market. These particular persons are people who already get good grades and possess the necessary motivation to complete their schoolwork without any outside distractions. One of the people I interviewed said they had very strict parents, so they would always focus on schoolwork first and they seldom got distracted. A young lady I interviewed said that she couldn’t think about doing anything fun unless she knew she did not have any schoolwork to attend to, so she would do try to get her homework done without any distractions so she could later enjoy her free time.  Another person I interviewed said they didn’t have a problem focusing on studying in high school because he would get in trouble with his parents if he didn’t keep his grades up, he said that he only had trouble once he got into college and his parents weren’t there to keep him in check. I also had another interviewer who said he used to have a problem with focusing on schoolwork, but his parents put him on medication to help him focus.
·         What: from this set of interviews I realized that people that have strict parents usually will not have a problem with studying and if focusing on school work is an issue for some people they will find other means to solve it (e.g. being put on medication). An app isn’t something that will be appealing to this group of people.
·         Why: I think that the need is not different, it is just that they do not have the need because there is some outside force (strict parents or medication for example) that keeps them focused on schoolwork.
Inside the Boundary                    Outside the Boundary
Who:
students who have a hard time focusing on schoolwork.
parents who want to make sure their kids are studying but can’t force them to focus themselves.

students who have some outside force that helps them study already.
parents who already are able to force their kids to focus on schoolwork.

What:

To help students focus on schoolwork or aid parents in making sure their children are focusing on schoolwork.
There is no need for the students that have strict parents or some outside force that helps them  focus.
Why:
The need exists because some students      have strict parents that
have trouble focusing on studying.               force them to study.
The students don’t have an outside force    have other outside forces
that forces them to focus on studying.          that help them focus.

summary: I think that I learned that the audience for my product is much smaller than I originally anticipated and that maybe my opportunity is not as viable as i originally thought.

  1. Hi John,
I think you did a great job picking interviewees who are outside of the boundary of your opportunity. You got some varying evidence that there are people who you might think to target initially, yet they have some individual reason that they do not fit into your opportunity. I also thought that my opportunity was not quite as strong as it was before doing this hypothesis. However, I do think there is still a great market out there for the both of us!
